Essay Prompt (In English):

  1. The Revolutionary: (in english:)   The Motorcycle Diaries is more than just a young man's reflection of a travel experience. What factors lead to a change in his social conscience? What transforms Ernesto into the Revolutionary "Che"? How is this depicted at the end of the film? Identify three moments in the film.
Reflect on the following poem: how does it tie in to the Motorcycle Diaries:

Robert Frost: The Road Not Taken:

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

  1. In the movie The Motorcycle Diaries, Ernesto “Che” Guevara went through a series of changes. This man went form being an ordinary young medical student named Ernesto into becoming a radical Revolutionary that went by the name of “Che”.
    Many factors went into the change in this man’s social conscience. Some more than others for example when he saw all the injustice that was going on in some of the countries in South America, he decided to do something about instead of just let it be. He saw how the people that wanted to work were just being exploited and treated unfairly because the owners knew that “Anaconda” mining company was the only company willing to hire them. Therefore the owners or those people that chose who could work that day could treat them however they wanted and the workers had to be okay with it. This incident got Che so upset that he actually threw a rock at the company’s truck and started defending the people. He also gave the mining couple that were waiting there the 15 dollars Chichina, the woman he claimed to love, gave him in order for him to buy her a bathing suit when he got to the united states; he felt as though the money would be well spent if it was given to somebody that actually needed it. He did this out of the kindness of his heart. He actually cared and wanted to help these people and so he did.
    The fact that the people in Venezuela were actually separated by a river because of their skin condition also took a toll on Che’s transformation. Che swam all the way across the river to the leper colony just to be with them on his birthday. He felt as though it was not fair for them to be isolated just because of a little body defect.
    Che decided to take the road less traveled by. He decided to be different. He didn’t want to do things that would benefit just him but he did things that would benefit the whole. His experience with suffering, poverty, exploitation, and illness led him to come to know that he didn’t want to be just a regular medical doctor but a doctor for the people.

  2. The Motorcycle Diaries is a film where a young boy takes a journey with his friends and his eyes open up to reality. Ernesto is young man who was part of middle class and never notices or cared about the social class difference there was in his country. In his journey traveling through South America he encounters many different situations where he sees how poor people suffer and get marginalized. There is three very impacting moment where his way of thinking and perspective changes. These trip lead to his change and the step to his new chapter of being know as “Che”.

    One of the moments that lead to his eyes opening to reality was when he meet the couple who where on their way to the mine in Chile. In this scene Ernesto and Alberto hear their story and the suffering they have gone through. This night is what Ernesto refers as “the coldest night of my life.” He never realized what privileged he had that he was traveling just to travel while others travel because they were looking for a way to survive. This makes Ernesto realize that life isn’t just a fun game but it’s a struggle for many people.

    The country where his eyes open up to reality and assimilates all the injustice of the world is in Peru. When he visits Machucpichu for the first time he is astonished of all the wonderful constructions that the Incas had made. He sees how smart they were and wonders what could have been if the Spanish did not kill them. He then compares and sees how a beautiful town and culture was destroyed to built cities where everyone there has more than enough money while others do not. He meets people from areas around and they explain how they were kicked out of their homes and their land was taken away leaving them homeless. He sees the privileged of being able to learn and speak Spanish while others do not.

    Ernesto and Alberto then continue traveling to the Amazon rain forest where he helps treat patients with leprosy. He sees that even religious people marginalize people. There are two islands where they sick and health people are separate. This really bothers Ernesto because it’s a form of discrimination that is unnecessary especially since the disease is not contagious. Ernesto tired of seeing the discrimination decide to swim across the river and celebrate with the sick people as well on his birthday because he believed it was not fair that they had to be isolated.

    Ernesto and Alberto’s journey helped them realized that life is not as easy as they believed. Alberto finally decided to mature and take responsibility and Ernesto realized that he had to find out who he now had become. In his trip he saw more poverty and suffering than rich or middle class. This journey led him to realize that he wanted to fight for the people so everyone can be treated equal and that there is no longer any form of suffering or discrimination in the world.

  3. The Motorcycle Diaries is an adventure where Alberto and Ernesto went to travel South American with just one motorcycle and what every money they had. Both where from middle class families so poverty never had been part of their lives. This story of “Che Guevara” tells us about the things that he had to go through and understand and realize what happens to the separation of the rich and poor, and the healthy and the sick. This made Ernesto to change from being fragile to a brave men who wanted change in the world.

    A time that he changed his original way of thinking was when he decided that it was unfair that the sick and healthy were separated and had to celebrate his birthday the day after just because they could no the in the same island as the others. He therefore decided to swim across the ocean to be with them. To him the people that were sick were nice people, poor but kind with a big heart.

    Ernesto saw the brutality that the poor people had to go through. People losing their jobs, being isolated from the rich like the boat scene where the rich where on the nice boat with lots of space while poor where behind and all stuck together with little space. Another time that Ernesto saw this differences was when the miners where choosing the people who to work and only chose some and where treated like animals. This scene made him really mad and wanted to do something but he could because wit was private land.

    Everything happens for a reason in Ernesto life. He Went on trip just for fun and came out with a new idead and perspective elf life. I agree with this quote “Letting the world change you and you can change the world”. If you let the world guide you then you know how to change others way of thinking. Ernesto trip let him to become the revolutionary man he was.

  4. The motorcycle diaries is an amazing coming of age story that depicts the life of two young men both with contrasting personalities. The movie begins with Ernesto and Alberto''s journey throughout South america. That very moment i believe changed Ernesto. it will be the first of many changes but the risk he took to leave everything behind was very significant. As a young man from the middle class he didn't know anything beyond his native Argentina and i thought his courage in wanting to explore the world was life changing because it exposed him to the realities of life.

    There were many factors that lead to his social consciousness. Among the three prominent ones were the miner incident, the leper colony and the interactions he had with the Natives in Peru. The miner incident impacted him very much because he witnessed the plight that workers were facing. they were not allowed fair pay and were exploited their "superiors", often overworked and abused. Che connected with them on such on an emotional level that he even gave them the last bit of money he had because he knew they would need it more. Che also experience something very similar when he spoke to the natives of Peru who expressed to him the difficulties they were facing and the social disparity that occurred in their own land. this lead to a change in Che because he wanted to fight for the people who didn't have the courage or the leadership to do so, he wanted to be that voice of change and strength. Lastly, the moment i believe changed his view on the world and society was when he took the voyage to see the Leper colony. What he saw in that colony made him realize just how marginalized south america was, the fact that the healthy and the sick were not allowed to see or touch each other bothered him. He saw that those who were poor and different were not accounted for in society and this opened his eyes very much.

    Towards the conclusion of the film he was no longer this naive young boy, he was fearless and more relentless than ever. So fearless even, that he swam across the amazon. Ernesto had a goal and set out to do it. In the end what led to Ernesto's transformation into Che was him realizing that life was not just about him, because true living is living for others, and though he was deemed a controversial figure in history there is no doubt that he touched many people. Everything he went through made his realize that the world is much bigger than he was and since we are all interconnected he would make it a priority to fight and make sure we were all treated equally, by any means necessary.
